This Jackalope was made to journey to the epic festival Burning Man, a place where radical self expression reigns supreme, where values of decommodification, creative cooperation and collaboration are at the heart of it's philosophy and existence. The space she is created in is called 'The Yard', a large metal working space where I was able to capture one of the many days, hours and bodies that it takes to put her together. It truly felt like a community project, where skills were being shared, discussions were being had, and ideas carried across the space on what the next task was. On this particular day, her head was being forklifted onto her furry-metallic body, a truly collaborative task. From stilt walking to trapeze, to silks, to puppetry ~ On top of these she works with different forms of visual art, clothing design and poetry writing, she is literally oozing from every direction and medium with artistic talents. Just hanging out and chatting with Anna feels like you're in some kind of circus/cabaret/weirdo show in the making. This feeling applies equally to the space she creates in. Part home,part art gallery,part creation space, part chill womb, there is inspiration everywhere. In every nook and cranny, on every wall and in every drawer, there is something of interest, something artful, something with history and intention. During this shoot Anna took me around her home and showed me all the spaces where the magic happens. Feeling the energy of the colourful walls painted red,blue and yellow, the breath of the plants intentionally placed around the space, and the inspiration of the artworks on the walls that help influence emotional work and story development. Nickeshia curated their home to be a meditative, open, and safe chill zone to work on their art. It felt so calm and blissful to be in the space with them. ~ In this set I had the joy of capturing them rehearse one of their solo works. They are currently working on a new solo work named 'Find Your Rhythm' that focuses on the Akashic Records and brings words, language and dreams together, to be performed in February 2024.
